Good Friday: I Once Was…

  • 1 Cor 6:9-11
  • a sober reminder/remembrance of the gruesomeness of the cross, but glory is available because of it
  • why is the cross necessary?

I once was…

  1. …Dominated by the power of sin
    • our behaviour demonstrates what rules us
    • sin’s power is statement of power and dominion
      • sin is a destructive dictator, a power with a death grip, not just a series of rebellious acts
    • kingdom of God is less of a place but more of a power
      • 1st kingdom of God was the Garden
      • Milton, “…Paradise was lost.”
    • 1 Cor 15:56-57; the Law continues to show us how much we need power of God to forgive us and redeem us
  2. …Defined by perversion of sin
    • the cross defines your identity; you become what you worship
      • what you worship appears in or changes your behaviour
    • perversion of sin leads us to state “I define me; God does not define me”
    • Eph 2:12; the cross defines your new identity
      • what is true in defining you now does not hold true forever because of the cross
  3. …damned by penalty of sin
    • not inheriting the kingdom of God means you’ll inherit eternal damnation
    • Matt 25:46; “If you choose to sin, you choose to suffer. If you choose obedience, you choose the blessing.”
    • Jesus also took the condemnation as well as the sin
      • As Jesus hung, it was dark for 3 hours while God placed His judgment upon Jesus, to the point Jesus cried “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
        • glimpse of the eternal separation and condemnation
