Learning to Think Biblically About My Identity

  • ultimate determining marks of our ID is in Christ
  • 1 Cor 3: divisions and difference of followers BUT what is most important is what God thinks about us
    • having firm grip on ID in Christ is essential in letting us live the life He intends
    • we are servants of Christ

  1. I am established as a new person (2 Cor 5:14-17)
    • your old self has died on the cross (Col 3)
    • born again; new birth; alive in Christ; once darkness, now light
    • do we need to know our critical changing point?
      • remember you were still on the broad road to destruction and that you have been placed on the narrow path now
  2. Joined to new family (Eph 2:17-19)
    • Christ’s bride; united in most special way (Eph 5; Rev 19)
    • we are His children, adopted into His family
    • His elect; Jesus says we are brothers
    • 1 Jn 3:1; Isa 48
      • we have the overwhelming comfort to approach Him as our Father
    • although all created by God, ID must be with God or else seen as children of wrath (Eph 2)
  3. Secured in a new position (Col 1:13-14)
    • you are either at peace with God or not
    • delivered, transformed, redeemed, forgiven (1 Pet 1:18)
    • justified, saved by His grace
      • all done by God, through Christ to change us
  4. Devotion to new master (Rom 14:8-9)
    • 64x Jesus talks about a new master; continuous mention in NT of ID as “servant of Christ”
    • slave of righteousness; belong to Christ
      • therefore we need to look to Him and look at Word on how we ought to live!
    • surrender to His will
    • trust in His ways
    • transformed in our thinking
      • I am counted a fool as a believer of Christ
    • Rev 22:3
  5. Focused on new ambition (Eph 2:8-10)
    • new intention/focus of what we do
    • Titus: good works
    • how we spend our time is important; should shine our light to others so they can be encouraged to focus our Christ
    • we are branches
  6. Saturated by new disposition (Eph 4:17-24)
    • new ID is something we need to put on everyday
    • ID distinguished by righteousness
      • He conforms and purifies us to be like Him
      • our desires are change to the core (new desires as mentioned in 1 Pet)
    • God exchanged our old heart and desires such that we realize holiness is much more satisfying to our souls
  7. Anchored in new longing (Col 3:1-4)
    • we are heirs, new citizen of heaven, awaiting our saviour
    • Rom 15; abounding in hope, does our longing spur a joy-filled hope of a brand new future?
      • Cue: Hold Fast Hope/In Exile
    • but we don’t always stay anchored therefore look back to the book to be refreshed, fed, washed and remember our ID in Christ
  8. Gripped by new purpose (2 Pet 3:18)
    • our new ID is such that we will glorify Christ
    • this is where we find our satisfaction
    • Insert: Piper’s quote about God being most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him
