Christianity Scripture

No, DON’T do as you please!

This random piece of scripture came up while searching for some regarding the Lord knowing your heart.
Ecc 11:9

Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

I was reading a bit about the Word of Faith/Prosperity Gospel movement, and about how they take some verses out of context, and how Scripture interprets scripture (ie. cross-referencing). In particular was the commentary about Joyce Meyer’s (and all the WOF false teachers) talking about “little gods” only quoting Psalm 82:6, but totally neglecting Psalm 82:7

6 I said, “You are gods,
sons of the Most High, all of you;
7 nevertheless, like men you shall die,
and fall like any prince.”

In the commentary I was reading (link; FB), the author comments:

God was clearly mocking these people,the people he was referring to were judges or His representatives who having become prideful were not doing their jobs properly.God was mocking them by calling the “gods(partly because of their pride) and reminding them they will die like everyone one else.This has been the interpretation of this simple verse for thousands of years,until these heretics came along.

Keeping this in mind, about how God can mock those who think so lofty of themselves, the above verse I stumbled upon may have made a bit more sense:
God is not actually telling you to do as your heart desires and as your eyes see fit, and is pointing out that if you do so you will be judged. Why? Because despite how good our intentions may be, we all have sin (Rom 3:23), and as a result our hearts will often have the human nature to desire evil. To follow these desires would lead us into further desolation and further decay (and ultimately judgment and destruction). Also, to solely allow our hearts to cheer us in our lives, rather than also relying upon the Lord, implies we live life according to our own strength, our own desires, our will.

I can only hope I’ve interpreted this correctly. I may have not.
