My friend Chris Forbes has written a very emotional passionate &heart; post directed toward all future UOIT students, and focuses on the residence/student-housing problems that all the on-campus students are facing.
If you’re reading this and will be a future UOIT student living on-campus, I highly recommend you read it on his blog at this post.
And if you’re reading this and think UOIT is the biggest, most expensive joke Ontario has invested in, I recommend you clutch your torso and laugh hysterically as you read all about it in this post.
Either way, you won’t be disappointed with Christopher J. Forbes’s experience.
There is no emotion in text… only passion. lol No. The post wasn’t meant to be emotional. I honestly don’t think I was being emotional at all. Yes I made some wild statements (i.e. sue the City of Oshawa) but those are just meant to get people talking. The post/essay was meant to get people to do something.
@ChrisJF If you want people to start talking, then why do you moderate the comments on your blog? What are you afraid of?
Other than that, Chris’s blog post is amazing. It is a must read for all current and future UOIT students.
Most landlords could not take much advantage from students because the house is expensive with high mortgage and the property tax is extremely high. That is why they can not rent to single family. The purpose of their buying house there because of students. Now you can see many houses for sale because of the new bylaw will make them bankrupt.
I am an onsite landlord, student and homeowner… I would like to take action against the City of Oshawa, the Windfield Farms Association and the builder Tribute (community where my home resides). I graduate in a matter of days; for 2 years of ownership I have kept quite to ensure this issue did not obstruct my education/attainment of my degree. What are the first steps I should take? Although my pockets aren’t as deep as I’d like, I really believe there is a case against age discrimination in this area. Not only is there a case in regard to age discrimination with direct reference to the City of Oshawa and the Windfield Farms Association, but I was mislead by Tribute in their sales pitch (“Great investment opportunities in the area”) and the City of Oshawa issued my property a legitimate permit to add 4 bedrooms in my basement to specifically accomodate students/friends. I reside in the homes which intially were built at 3200+ square feet.
Chris – I too love UOIT and believe its a great institution with great potential. This housing issue could greatly affect the growth of UOIT and its consequential reputation. You’re absolutely correct in saying that someone needs to do something, where do you suggest I start and where could I locate significant, reputable support?
BTW – I have done nothing illigal and believe if I take action I’ll only lose financially (at worse)… the City of Oshawa, the Windfield Farms Association, and Tribute have nothing to “bit me in the ass with,” so to speak and have only but: discriminated, mis-lead, and made UN-EDUCATED decisions in regard to UOIT, the surrounding areas, and most important, the students.
Hi Andrew,
I’m not a lawyer but I think we definitely have a case. Especially because Barbara Hall, the Chief Commissioner of the Ontario Human Rights Commission, warned the City of Oshawa (eight days before they passed the By-law) that this by-law “raises human rights concerns.”

I would also contact the Student Association and see what they are up to. I think the SA President said he wanted to pursue legal action but I don’t know if that is going to happen.
Hi “Landlord”,
To clarify, I’m not against landlords, I’m with them. I just think some landlord charge way too much. Single families do live in the neighborhood. They pay mortgages and taxes just like every other home owner. My point is that landlords at other universities make money from investing in a home for a number of years and then selling. They do not make profit not from the rent money. They make profit when the price of the home increases.

P.s. You guys can post on my blog too. 🙂 Though I’ll reply to your comments wherever you post them.
